Noriyuki ‘Pat’ Morita, 1932-2005

Today is indeed a sad day for aspiring black belts everywhere, as Mr. Miyagi, one of the most significant figures in the history of martial arts, is dead. He was 73, though it wouldn’t have surprised me if you had told me he was 73 in 1984, when the original Karate Kid came out. Another surprising revelation from his death: Like his most famous character, Pat Morita actually did do time in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Well, big up to Pat Morita for going through that and for being the best part of just about the best movie ever.
